Echo Entertainment Group Ltd. proposed a $1.3 billion expansion plan for its Treasury Casino in downtown Brisbane that would expand its site from one to four city blocks in part by taking over government land that is to be sold off. The expanded casino resort would add hotel rooms, bars and restaurants. Echo is seeking tax breaks and guaranteed exclusive casino rights to the city even as it seeks to fend off Crown Ltd.’s attempt to crack its monopoly in Sydney with a rival casino there.
Meanwhile, the deadline for consortiums bidding to develop a cruise terminal near Brisbane at the Gold Coast to complete their detailed proposals is likely to be extended. Queensland and the Gold Coast city government had expected to gather the detailed proposals by mid-year but the four consortiums that have been short-listed for the project have all asked for more detailed specifications. Three of the four groups have included a casino in their plans.
