Macau’s gaming regulator has warned concessionaires and junket operators to observe the phone ban on gaming tables after a crackdown on an illegal online proxy betting operation last week, local media reports.
Macau’s Judiciary Police arrested 17 people last week in connection with a HK$10 million (US$1.3 million) illegal gambling ring, according to Macau TDM.
Officials said the syndicate was run by locals and mainland Chinese, which recruited customers through the social media app WeChat.
According to police, the gambling ring would live stream gambling results to customers via the app’s group chat function.
In a press release from the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau on Friday, the gaming regulator warned concessionaires and junket operators to maintain “strict compliance” with the phone ban, and to immediately report any illicit behavior.
