Bengal takes lottery ticket sales online

The government of Bengal will soon be making its lottery tickets available online in an effort to generate more revenue, local media reports.

“Tickets of West Bengal state lottery will soon be available on the Internet. We won’t run online lotteries but tickets of existing draws will be available on the Internet. This will help generate more revenue,” said a senior Nabanna official.

Sources said the online lottery ticket sale is part of a finance department initiative to generate more revenues for various “welfare schemes”.

Currently, the state government earns around Rs 35 crore (US$5.1 million) annually through lotteries.

According to a senior official, if they can make lotteries more attractive in Bengal, they expect to earn around Rs 2,000 crore per year.

There has also been moves to draw lotteries daily, rather than weekly.
