5G technology a key focal point of the show: MGS organizer

The 7th annual MGS Entertainment Show concluded its three-day conference and exhibition on Thursday, a show which gathered thousands of gaming and non-gaming executives from around the globe, organizers told AGB.

“It’s a special edition of the show,” as it is situated between the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, in October, and the 20th anniversary of Macau’s return to the People’s Republic of China, in December.

Over the years, the MGS Entertainment Show “has pivoted towards a wider technology and innovation focus at its exhibition,” as part of efforts to respond to Macau’s position as a world tourism and leisure center, organisers underline.

Speaking to Asia Gaming Brief, Henry Lo, Director of Exhibition at the MGS Entertainment Show, said he felt the exhibition was able to achieve this goal in 2019.

One of the most important highlights this year is 5G technology, said Lo.

“Because 5G is coming, not only for integrated resorts but also for the wider gaming industry.”

“This is why we introduced the concept of the ‘5G Casino’, one where the movement of machines across the casino floor will be made much easier in the future – saving on costs and labor,” he said.

Asked for an example, Lo explained: “At the moment, all machines are connected via a cable to their respective servers. 4G technology can’t replace wires as it is too unstable.

“However, 5G is much faster and more stable than wired connections. With 5G there’s no need to plug in physical wires, which means in the future, gaming machines will be able to move around at ease,” he said.

When asked about the exhibitor and visitor turn out, Lo said he received positive feedback from exhibitors he talked to during the show.

“There have been improvements from some of our bigger exhibitors, such as IGT, Aristocrat, Scientific Games. I even had a chance to speak to an exhibitor from Switzerland, who were first-timers at MGS.”

“The feedback we’ve received is quite positive. The stream of visitors may not be what they expected, but they were able to reach the right people and secure contracts,” said Lo.

Lo also noted an uptick in visitors from Canada, South-east Asia, and Korea, many of whom utilized the pre-event online registration facility.

The MGS Entertainment Show is set to hold its 8th edition in November 2020 in Macao.
