Wilfred Wong, President of Sands China, has announced that the company is in the process of obtaining approval from Macau's government for a plan to construct a hotel that would be exclusively designed for the MICE industry.

Sands China has cut more than 3,000 non-resident workers since the start of the pandemic to manage costs and maintain employment for its local workers, said company president Wilfred Wong. 

Sands China President Wilfred Wong says that he expects the group’s performance to improve in the second half of the year, following a $166 million loss registered in the second quarter. Wong says that the Londoner Court hotel, its revamped 370 luxury residential-style suite project, should be open by the October Golden Week.

Sands China president Wilfred Wong said the group is expecting “new heights” for occupancy rates in its Macau hotels over the summer holiday, based on performance in the recent May Golden Week. 

Sands China president Wilfred Wong has indicated that the company has not launched a voluntary exit program for its employees, but has encouraged employees near retirement age to retire earlier.

Sands China President Wilfred Wong told local media that hotel occupancy in the group's hotels topped 90 percent during the recent Golden Week holiday.

Sands China President Wilfred Wong said the operator has been given a possible opening day in early February for the Londoner, formerly known as Sands Cotai Central. Wong didn't give a specific date.

The President of Sands China says that while overall operations are improving, the lack of junkets is hitting the bottom line, as it focuses on the mass and premium mass segments.
