Yangon police make progress in busting gambling operations

Police in Yangon have seized more than K200 million ($200,000) in 3,206 arrests and raids associated with gambling over the last three years, a police official said.
Last year alone, police seized over K48 million and arrested 1,885 people as part of efforts to intensify the crackdown on illegal gambling, the Myanmar Business Today reported.
“We will step up the investigation and raids on gambling activities in Yangon region along with other regions and states in 2015. We also urge the public to report to officials if they have knowledge of gambling activities such as the locations of bookies,” he told the newspaper, asking to remain anonymous because he was not authorized to talk to the media.
The cases mostly involve playing cards, football bets and illegal street lotteries.
In January this year, Naypyitaw accounted for most of the 215 illegal gambling cases uncovered, which included 83 arrests.
