Singapore casino entry levy declines 7.6 pct

Casino entry levies paid by Singaporeans and permanent residents have fallen to their lowest levels since 2010, according to an annual report released by the Singapore Tote Board.

Total casino entry levies reached S$134 million (US$99.6 million) in the twelve months ended March 31, 2017, down from S$145 million (US$107.8 million) registered the year before.

For a citizen or permanent resident of Singapore to enter a casino, payment of a $100 daily levy, or a $2,000 annual levy is required.

Local experts said there were two main reasons for the decline in local visitation.

Firstly, Singaporeans are increasingly put off by the need to pay an entry levy, and have opted for alternatives such as illegal online casinos.

Secondly, there have been an increasing amount of Singaporeans excluded from casinos, either as a result of self-exclusion, third-party exclusions, or automatic exclusions for those that have declared bankruptcy, or are receiving government financial aid.

According to the Singapore Tote Board, the amounts wagered on lotteries and sports have continued to increase year-on-year, reaching S$7.2 billion, up 2.5 percent.
