MTGA announces leadership change

Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority has announced the resignation of its president and CEO Robert “Bobby” Soper, effective immediately, according to a press release from the company on Thursday.  

It was not clear why Soper’s resignation came so suddenly, but it is understood Soper resigned in order to “pursue other opportunities”.

In the interim, Soper will replaced by MTGA’s former CEO Mitchell Grossinger Etess, subject to regulatory filings or approvals.

“Having served as General Manager of both our Connecticut and Pennsylvania properties, Bobby actively pursued the growth of the Mohegan gaming enterprise to ensure its viability and survivability in an ever-increasingly competitive industry, and he helped us achieve important gains across the country and around the world,” said Kevin P. Brown, chairman of the Management Board of the Authority.

“The Authority is on good footing with its lowest debt-leverage ratio since the recession; combined with the outstanding opportunities presented by a number of management agreements put into place under his stead, MTGA is postured to sustain the tribe for generations to come. Mitchell’s experience, and sustained connection over the past year, will allow us to sustain our progress while we commence the search for a new corporate leader.”

The MTGA is an instrumentality of the Mohegan Tribe of Indians of Connecticut.

It is the operator of the Mohegan Sun, a gaming and entertainment complex located on an approximately 185-acre site on the Tribe’s reservation.

The authority is also building a new $1.2 billion integrated resort in Incheon, Korea, along with its partner KCC Corp.

Named “Inspire Integrated Resort”, the resort is scheduled to break ground in 2017, and open in early 2020.

The development will include a casino, luxury hotel, shopping areas, an entertainment arena and convention venues on the island, which is expected to be completed by 2019.
