HK-Zhuhai-Macau bridge aims for 2017 completion

The bridge connecting Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macau is expected to complete by the end of 2017, said Hong Kong’s Secretary for Transport and Housing.

While the bridge was initially targeting an end of 2016 completion, it was delayed due to labor shortages and a slower than expected land reclamation process.

"... the objective is to complete the works by the end of this year. That is the current objective [amongst] the various sides,'' said Anthony Cheung Bing-leung, quoted by The Standard.

Mr. Cheung said the commissioning date had yet to be determined, explaining that "it all depends on the progress of works.''

In a Thursday report from the South China Morning Post, the secretary warned the project may overrun its budget “due to construction and manpower challenges.”

The main section, jointly funded by Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China, was originally estimated to cost around RMB 15.7 billion (US$2.3 billion), with Hong Kong contributing around 43 percent of the total.

“[I] believe if there really are to be additional expenses, each of the three sides will maybe have to contribute funds according to that ratio,” said Cheung, adding that they will need to decide later whether they need to obtain additional loans.

“Later we will have a more reliable estimate, and we will explain this to society,” he said.
