Esports, cultural identity and hospitality key to Macau growth

While Macau’s rich cultural history will be key to turning the city into “must-see” tourist destination, there is also an opportunity to improve hospitality offerings and expand new industries, such as esports, according to experts at the MGS Summit.

Sands China President Wilfred Wong, speaking on a panel session about the “One Belt One Road” initiative, said there is a largely untapped market outside of China and Hong Kong, while Macau itself also has a lot more to offer than gaming, he said.

“There are many potential treasures to explore in Macau, and for that, we need the help of our local entrepreneurs,” said Wong.

Dr Tong La Iok of Baker Tilly, who was also present on the panel, discussed the potential of the esports industry and how it could be used to enhance Macau’s offerings.

“The smart city initiative can be used to drive esports tournaments in Macau,” said Tong.

Pansy Ho, group executive chairman and managing director of Shun Tak Holdings added that she believes Macau can use its traditional industries to grow and nurture the esports industry.

“Esports is a brand of products that fits well in Macau. It’s a combination of latest technology, arts and culture… We should utilize our expertise in hospitality into new areas of growth such as MICE events and cuisine,” said Ho.

Wong said that Sands will be looking to expand its range of food & beverage offerings in the near future - such as more local Portuguese cuisine offerings at its properties.
