Draft gaming law expected to reach cabinet soon

Cambodia’s draft gaming law will be submitted to the cabinet for approval within this month, opening the doors to foreign investment in the country’s gaming industry, local media reports.

“We got a lot of input for the draft law after many inter-ministerial and stakeholders’ meetings,” Ros Phearun, deputy director-general of the Finance Ministry’s financial industry department, told Khmer Times on Monday.

“The draft law which was finalized by joint technical teams from the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Ministry of Interior will now be submitted to the government’s cabinet within this month,” he said.

Asked whether there would be delays at the cabinet-level for approval of the draft law, Phearun said there wouldn't as they had already incorporated input from all the concerned ministries and parties.

“We really need to get this law off the ground fast because it will help us manage the [gaming] industry better and also collect taxes. In addition, it will also attract more big investors into the industry and also bring in tourists,” he added.

The new legislation is expected to contain a gambling tax of between 4 and 5 percent of total gaming revenue.

The new law will also authorize the government to establish a Gaming Management Committee, which will look into the prevention of money laundering and other criminal activities
