Outsized VIP gains and premium mass strength saw Wynn, Melco and Galaxy “significantly” outperform its Macau peers, according to Bernstein analysts in a note on Friday.

Although theme parks are big business in Asia and draw in the crowds, they need a unique selling point, branded merchandise and strong visitation to generate enough revenue to warrant the return on investment.

Casino operator MGM recently supported a University of Macau (UM) study tour to Las Vegas.

The Adelson Family Foundation on Tuesday presented a cheque for more than $1.9 million to the University of Saint Joseph.

While the month-to-date ADR is up by three percent from December, the ADR number is down 10 percent over a similar period (Jan 1-8) in 2016.

According to channel checks, the VIP hold rate has been at a normal level, with VIP likely up low single digits month-on-month, while mass was marginally down month-on-month, said the brokerage.

While 2017 saw strong VIP recovery, the VIP model is likely to face headwinds going into the second half of 2018.

The 2018 outlook for Macau is positive, with gaming revenues likely to continue their recovery, though risks remain including the looming end of casino concessions and organized crime, according to risk consultancy Steve Vickers Associates.
